Emergency Furnace Repair
No heat in a cold snap: frosted vents, frozen condensate lines, failed igniters and inducer motors, fixed or made safe first.

Edmonton, St. Albert, Sherwood Park & area
Igniters, flame sensors, inducer motors, frozen condensate lines and snow-blocked vents: the failures that stop Edmonton furnaces in a cold snap, diagnosed properly and priced in writing before any work starts.
About Us
YEG Furnace Repair looks after gas furnaces across Edmonton and the region, from 1950s bungalows in Jasper Place to builder-grade furnaces reaching their 15th winter in Windermere. Most calls are one failed part. Some are a furnace that has earned retirement. We tell you which, with the reasons, before you spend a dollar.

A proper repair starts with the sequence: thermostat call, inducer, pressure switch, igniter, flame, blower. Testing each step finds the part that actually failed, instead of swapping the most expensive one first. The same visit checks the vents and the condensate line, because in an Edmonton January those cause as many no-heat calls as any part.

Repair first, replacement when it is the honest answer, and the cooling and hot water work that shares a utility room with your furnace.

No heat in a cold snap: frosted vents, frozen condensate lines, failed igniters and inducer motors, fixed or made safe first.

A real tune-up before winter: combustion test, flame sensor, igniter, pressure switch, condensate trap, filter and vents.

Swapping a tired furnace for a 95–98% unit, including the chimney and hot water tank venting questions older homes raise.

High-efficiency furnaces sized from a heat loss calculation, vented right for snow, with the gas permit and inspection.

Capacitors, contactors, refrigerant leaks and frozen coils on the few hot weeks a year you actually need the AC.

Cold-climate heat pumps paired with your gas furnace, honest about what they do at -25°C and what they cost.
What We Fix
The burners never lit or lit and dropped out: a failed hot surface igniter or a dirty flame sensor are the usual suspects on furnaces past eight or ten years.
Snow drifted over the side-wall intake, or frost from the exhaust plume closed the pipe, and the pressure switch shut the furnace down to protect the house.
A condensate line or trap froze where it runs near a cold wall or to a floor drain in an unheated space, and the water backed up into the furnace.
A clogged filter tripping the high limit switch, a dirty flame sensor, or a furnace that was oversized for the house when it went in.
The inducer (draft) motor bearings are going. It usually gets louder for a few weeks and then stops, and the furnace stops with it.
A failed blower capacitor on a PSC motor, or a failing ECM blower motor or module on newer variable-speed furnaces.

Why Choose Us
You see the diagnosis and the price before any part goes in or any furnace comes out.
Gas work by certified gasfitters and refrigerant work by certified refrigeration mechanics.
A $300 igniter on a 12-year-old furnace is a repair. We say so, and we say when it isn't.
Replacements go in under a gas permit the contractor pulls, followed by an inspection.
Tell us what the furnace is doing. We reply with an arrival window and a price range, and the price is confirmed in writing before any work starts.
Working Process
Send the request with what the furnace is doing, its age if you know it, and the blink code on the board. No-heat calls get priority; we confirm the arrival window when we reply.
A technician tests the sequence from thermostat call to flame, reads the error history and checks venting and condensate, then explains what failed and why.
You get the repair price in writing before work starts. If replacement makes more sense, you get that quote too, with the reasons, and you decide.
Edmonton Furnace Guide

Smell gas or hear the CO alarm?
Get everyone out first. Don't touch light switches, the thermostat or the furnace. Call ATCO Gas's 24-hour emergency line or 911 from outside. Then book the repair.
A furnace in Edmonton works harder than almost anywhere else in the country. January daily means sit around -10°C, cold snaps below -30°C come most winters, and the heating season runs from late September into May. That is why the parts that wear with run time, igniters, flame sensors, inducer motors and blower motors, fail here earlier than the brochure suggests, and why they tend to fail on the coldest night of the year, when the furnace has been running almost without a break.
High-efficiency furnaces vent through two white PVC pipes in the side wall. Drifting snow buries the intake, or the exhaust plume freezes into a ring of frost that closes the pipe, and the pressure switch shuts the furnace down, exactly as it should. The condensate those furnaces make has to drain somewhere; where the line runs near a cold wall or out to a floor drain in an unheated space, it freezes, backs up and stops the furnace. Before you book, a look at the vents from outside and at the drain line is worth two minutes; our nine safe checks walk through them.
Most Edmonton furnaces last 15 to 20 years. A $300 igniter on a 12-year-old furnace is a repair every time. An inducer motor on an 18-year-old furnace with a rusted cabinet is a conversation. A cracked heat exchanger usually means replacement, and you should see the evidence before you agree to it. Since 2009 every new gas furnace sold in Canada is at least 90% AFUE, so a replacement also means PVC venting, and in 1950s to 1980s homes it can leave the hot water tank "orphaned" in the chimney, a line item a good quote spells out. Our repair-or-replace rules and the replacement page cover the numbers.
In Alberta, gas work is done by a certified gasfitter and refrigerant work by a certified refrigeration mechanic, and a furnace replacement needs a gas permit and an inspection. Door-to-door furnace sales have been banned in Alberta since 1 March 2019, so anyone knocking with a furnace offer is already breaking the rules. More in how to choose a furnace company in Edmonton.

The questions Edmonton homeowners ask before they book. More answers on the FAQ page.
Ask Your Own QuestionStart with the simple things. Make sure the thermostat is set to Heat, not Fan On, and a few degrees above room temperature. Look at the filter; a clogged one can make the furnace overheat and trip its limit switch, so the burners shut off while the blower keeps running. Then go outside and check that the two PVC pipes on the side wall are clear of snow and frost. If it still blows cold, count the LED blinks through the sight glass on the blower door and include the count in your request. Do not open the burner compartment or reset any safety switch.
In an Edmonton January the cause is usually outside, not inside. A high-efficiency furnace draws air in and pushes exhaust out through PVC pipes in the side wall, and drifting snow or frost from the exhaust plume can block them. The pressure switch then sees no draft and the furnace locks out. The other common cause is a frozen condensate line or trap, often where the line runs near a cold wall. Clear the pipes by hand and look at the condensate line for ice, but do not cut it. If it keeps happening, the vent termination or line routing needs a proper fix.
It depends on the part. Typical Edmonton ranges for 2026: flame sensor clean or replace $129 to $299, hot surface igniter $225 to $450, pressure switch $275 to $550, blower capacitor $175 to $350, control board $500 to $1,200, gas valve $550 to $1,100, inducer motor $650 to $1,400, PSC blower motor $600 to $1,200, and ECM blower motor or module $900 to $2,000. Those include the part and the labour to fit it. Your price is confirmed in writing before any work starts, so you can decide whether the repair makes sense for the age of your furnace.
Look at age, the part, and the heat exchanger. A furnace under about 15 years old with a sound heat exchanger and a failed igniter, flame sensor or pressure switch should almost always be repaired; a $300 igniter on a 12-year-old furnace is money well spent. Replacement makes sense when the heat exchanger is cracked, when the furnace is past 20 years, or when it needs its second or third major part in a couple of seasons. Furnaces typically last 15 to 20 years, less if they were oversized or never maintained. A good technician will tell you when one more repair is the better call.
If you smell rotten eggs, leave the house now with everyone in it. Do not touch light switches, the thermostat or the furnace, and do not use a phone inside, because any of them can make a spark. Once you are outside and away from the house, call ATCO Gas's 24-hour emergency line or 911. Do not go back in until you are told it is safe. A heating contractor comes after the gas utility or the fire department has made the house safe, not before. Do not try to find the leak yourself.
No. Since 1 March 2019, Alberta has banned door-to-door sales of energy-related home products, including furnaces, air conditioners and hot water tanks. Anyone knocking on your door to sell one is breaking the rule, whatever they say about inspections, the utility or a government program. Do not let them into the house and do not sign anything. If you think your furnace needs work, contact a heating company yourself, ask for a written quote that names the equipment, the gas permit and the price, and compare it with one or two others.
